Approach

Approach

Approach and entry: Both the anchorage and harbour are approached from the W. The port is entered between Punta Mbonda (02°05.5'N 009°45.3'E) and Punta Ngaba, 20.5nm S, The bay is seldom surveyed and the bottom is generally mud but irregular. Towards the S part there are patches of rocks.

Channel of approach: Extends E of the meridian of 09°43'E between the parallels 01°48'N and 01°54'N. This is divided by the parallel 01°51'N into N and S. The N part is used by tankers proceeding to the anchorage and the S part by cargo and fishing vessels.

If approaching Puerto Macias from the S, a dangerous wreck lies 0.5nm S of the Jetty Light (01°49.6'N 009°44.4'E).

Vessels should approach the port with caution due to offshore oil and gas activity.

Anchorages

There are two anchorage areas:

Bata anchorage: Has depth of between 5.5 and 7.3m. Two wrecks lie approx 0.7nm WNW and NW respectively from the head of the wharf. Another anchorage position can be found, bearing 165°, approx 1.5nm offshore in depths of 11.7m sand. The holding ground is good, however, there is a heavy swell. Attention should be taken to ensure that a vessel anchoring in this position does not drift too far S as there is a further wreck 0.9nm NNW of the head of the wharf.

Vessels approaching the inner anchorage at night should do so by using the white sector of the light exhibited from the head of the wharf, otherwise they should anchor in deeper water and move in closer during daylight.

Anchorage for vessels loading logs can be found 0.5nm W of the mouth of Rio Ecuco.

Puerto Macias Nguema anchorage: Lies approx 1nm W of the jetty in depths of approx 20.0m.

Submarine pipeline: A pipeline extends approx 0.7nm NW from a position on the shore 0.6nm SW of the head of the wharf at Bata.
