Approach

updated Oct 2018

Approach

Banyuwangi is difficult to identify in the afternoon, when the sun is behind it, but Gunung Kelatakan, on Bali, 6nm E, provides a good mark.

Approaching from S care should be taken to pass E of the 4.6m shoal, 1nm S of Tanjung Pakem.

If making for the inner roads, the direction of the tidal stream should be noted by any vessels at anchor.

As the inner anchorage is narrow it should be approached against the stream. With a S going stream Gosong Nieuw should be approached from S, and with a N going stream N of the shoal N of Takat Deptford.

Approaching the S entrance between Gosong Nieuw and the coast, steer to pass NE of Takat De Groots and Karang Krokodil, and then between the latter and Gosong Nieuw.

Approaching the N entrance of the inner roadstead steer for the factory 0.75nm N of the port office, bearing 267°, until the red beacon marking the N end of the shoal N of Takat Deptford can be rounded. Care must be taken to avoid the 6.7m shoal ENE of this beacon.

Caution: When rounding the red beacon to shape course S for the inner road, it should be remembered that the shoal extends 0.2nm SW from the beacon.

When leaving the inner roadstead always proceed against the stream.

Port limits

Pelabuhan Banyuwangi is bounded on the S by a line drawn in a 225° direction from Takat De Groots (De Groots Klip) (08°13'S 114°24'E) to the coast; on the N by a line drawn in a 292.5° direction from 8°6.5'S 114°25'E to the coast, and on the E by a line joining Takat De Groots and 8°6.5'S 114°25'E.

Anchorages

It should be noted that the S end of Pelabuhan Banyuwangi lies in the prohibited anchorage area where submarine cables exist, E and S of Tanjung Pakem.

The outer road between Karang Ommen and Gosong Nieuw affords good anchorage for moderate sized vessels in depths of 18.0-20.0m, but the bottom is uneven. During the NW monsoon there is seldom any sea, and communications with the shore can always be maintained.

Depths in the inner road vary between 7.0m and 13.0m, but there is only limited space. It is advisable to moor to avoid a foul anchor.

Restrictions

Mooring and unmooring is restricted to daylight hours only.

Bar at 200m E of quay, depth is 7.3m below CD.

The coastal foreshore is rocky and sandy.

Tugs

Available.
