Approach
updated Oct 2024Approach
Note: Barito Estuary Channel is a newly made channel, shorter than the existing channel and, because of its narrowness, tug boats and barges are not allowed to overtake other vessels. The old channel is now silted up.
Sungai Barito may be approached from between SW and S then entered through a dredged channel over the bar, on the alignment of leading lights, into the river.
To reach the port, vessels have to navigate the Barito River, passing the outer bar which is approx 6nm in length, with a least dredged depth of 5.0m. The Port Authority should be consulted to ensure that there is adequate depth over the bar at HW before entering and leaving.
From a navigational point of view the Barito River (21nm from the outer buoy to Trisakti Wharf) presents no difficulties, provided the outer bar is properly marked. In this respect the situation is not always satisfactory as the three buoys often drift off station.
Directions for the approach to Sungai Barito: From the pilot boarding position, steer to pass close to the outer lightbuoy (red and white stripes; Fl W 5s), moored 9nm SSW of Tanjung Pedadatua and cross the bar on the alignment of the leading light beacons, bearing approx 028.5°.
Caution: A tongue of coastal mud bank extends S from the W entrance point towards the channel to a position near Nos 5 and 6 Lightbuoys; the Old Bar Lighthouse stands on this tongue, 2.25nm SSW of Tanjung Pedadatua (03°31'S 114°28'E); a beacon (port hand) stands 0.65nm E of the lighthouse and similar beacons extend SSW and parallel with the entrance channel.
The track then leads N to Tanjung Telan (03°27'S 114°30'E) from which a light (red beacon, height 6m) is exhibited.
From Tanjung Telan to Trisaki, 8.0nm further up river, the chart is the best guide. The track passes between the W bank of the river and Palau Kaget (03°25'S 114°30'E), the largest of the group of mid channel islands with another island close S of it.
Caution: Fish stakes may be encountered on the E side of the channel; a dangerous wreck lies 0.2nm W off Trisakti Wharf.
Terusan Bromo, a short canal 500m in length and 200m wide with a least depth of 4.0m, is entered nearly 1.25nm NE of the entrance to Sungai Martapura (03°21'S 114°32'E). The canal links Sungai Barito with Sungai Martapura further upstream thereby avoiding several sharp bends in the reaches of the latter.
Anchorages
All vessels are required to inform the time and position of anchoring via VHF Ch 12.
Arrival anchorage area: Situated SW of Fairway Lightbuoy (03°40'S 114°26'E). The recommended position lies 0.5nm SW of the buoy, in depths of between 7.0 to 11.0m, mud and sand, where vessels may await HW before crossing the bar. The holding ground, however, is not good.
Restrictions
Vessels up to 200m in length and 6.0m draught can enter on HW and berth at Trisakti. Tankers enter during daylight hours only.
For Sungai Martapura, vessels of up to 85m can proceed to the old port.
Underwater Cables: 8m depth, East and West of Kembang Island. Cables, 36m height, are also located in this area.
Wreck: In position 03°35.46'S 114°29.06''E.
Tugs
Two tugs are available, not compulsory.
Mooring
PPSA is a service system used by Banjarmasin Port which controls all estimated times for vessel mooring according to a Vessel Services Request and Loading/Unloading Goods (PPKB) forms supplied by the Agent. The PPSA will then inform the Agent of an estimated time of mooring for the vessel one day before arrival.
