Approach

updated Jun 2016

Approach

The least depth in the entrance channel is 3.2m. Silting occurs particularly after continuous SW winds with dry weather; dredging is then carried out. The harbour is approached from the Saint George's Channel approx 1nm N of Arklow Head and the entrance, 55m in width, is between two parallel piers.

Turning basin: Within the river, approx 0.35nm above the harbour entrance, there is a turning basin (close NW of the tidal basin entrance) 122m in length and 107m in width.

Caution: The river shoals immediately NW of the turning basin.

Directions for entry: The entrance is approached from NE keeping in mid channel between the pierheads. Due allowance must be made for the set caused by the tidal streams which run across the entrance.

Anchorages

Outer anchorage: Vessels can anchor outside the harbour in offshore winds, but there is no shelter from onshore winds and it is advisable to leave when the wind becomes S of SW or E of N.

The recommended berth is between 3 and 0.5nm offshore, SE of the pierheads.

Restrictions

Daylight entry and sailing only.

Tugs

Limited towage facilities are available.
