Approach

updated Nov 2021

Approach

From the main NS shipping channel in the Strait of Juan de Fuca, the channel into the port of Anacortes is an unrestricted channel, length 30nm, depth 30.0m (min).

Guemes Channel is entered from Rosario Strait through an area of water bounded on its N side by the S coast Cypress Island and to the S by Fidalgo Island. The channel lies between Guemes Island and Fidalgo Island, which is 0.5nm wide at its narrowest part, and extends 3nm E to give access to Anacortes. The channel has depths from 10.5m to 33m; the main part of the channel has been wire swept to a depth of 10.0m.

The port and its facilities line the S shore of Guemes Channel and are entered direct from the fairway through the channel.

The refinery piers at March Point are approached direct from the E end of Guemes Channel.

Anchorages

Vessels anchor in depths of 15.5-17.8m, 0.8nm ENE of Cap Sante Waterway No 2 Light (red triangle on a dolphin) (48°30.7'N 122°35.9'W).

Tugs

Tugs are available throughout 24 hours, VHF Ch 10, for ship assist services. Most vessels use 2 tugs for berthing and 2 tugs when leaving berths. Foss Maritime (Tel: +1 800 562 2856) and

Crowley Marine (Tel: +1 206 340 2903) supply tugs.

Mooring

Port side alongside dock for dry bulk; starboard side for logs.

At the refinery piers the tidal stream may set a vessel onto the berth and the use of an anchor in berthing is recommended. When using the inside berths care must be taken against setting southwards into shallow water.
