Approach

Approach

The most favourable approach to Ammassalik is usually from S and SW, inside the ice fields which often lie around Kap Dan (65°31.0'N 037°11.0'W) and which may extend more than 20nm SE.

The coast of Ammassalik may be approached from S on a course of approx 030°. At a distance of approx 20nm offshore the entrance to Sermilik can be distinguished by a wide gap in the ice cap, which elsewhere extends in an unbroken line between W and N. Kap Dan should be steered for until Ortunuviaq, a steep granite extremity of a peninsula 718m high, can be identified, when it should be steered for. When about 0.2nm off Ortunuviaq, course should be altered to approx 040° for the middle of the entrance. When abreast a rocky islet lying close off the W entrance point alter course to approx 000° and pass the entrance in mid channel. After passing Solos Pynt, alter course NW and follow the SW shore of the harbour to the settlement.
