Approach

updated Nov 2018

Approach

Amamapare is approached from the sea by a well marked channel approx 12nm in length, and entered on the alignments of three sets of leading lights.

A lightbuoy is moored 1nm W of the approach channel entrance, approx 8nm W of Tanjung Pohon Batu. The channel is 270m in width and its limits are marked with numerous lightbuoys and light beacons.

Bright working lights are exhibited from the copper mines, 53nm NNE of Tanjung Pohon Batu and are visible for at least 90nm SW from the mines in clear weather.

Anchorages

Outer anchorage: Anchorage may be obtained, for those vessels awaiting a berth, or required to top off cargo loading, in a position about 0.5nm W of the Fairway Lightbuoy (04°55.0'S 136°40.0'E) in a depth of 36m.

The outer anchorage, however is exposed to NW and W winds, particularly between Dec and Feb, and a disruptive short swell may produce rolling.

Good sheltered anchorage may be obtained in the river at Amamapare in depths of approx 27m.

Restrictions

Vessels up to 20,000DWT may berth alongside the ore loading jetty, where there are depths of approx 8m - 9m. Vessels are loaded by conveyor belt from the latter to a max bar draught of 6.7m and then, if necessary, topped up by two 2,000t purpose built barges in the outer anchorage off the entrance to the approach channel, where there are depths of 27.4m.

Tugs

Tugs are available to assist berthing.
