Approach

updated Jun 2025

Approach

From the vicinity of NE of Pointe Pescade, the track leads generally SE for about 3.5nm, passing NE of Pointe des Consuls, which is fringed with shoal water to a distance of 0.2nm NE, then NE of Pointe des Anglais, where a rock spit extends 0.25nm N, then NE of Roche M'Tahen, the outermost rock of an area of rocky foul ground fringing Point el Kettani, 0.3nm WSW. A light (E cardinal daymark on black tower, yellow bands "M'Tahen" in white), is exhibited from the NE side of Roche M'Tahen. Then NE of Ilot de la Marine, with an old lighthouse standing on it. A rocky patch, with a depth of 5.3m over it, lies close E of the islet and the islet is connected to the mainland by reclaimed land on the N side of Alger harbour.

The port is approached using the channel between Anchorage Areas No 1 and No 2 and then passing through the North entrance between Jetee Kheir Eddine and Jetee du Vieux Port. A second entrance is located to the South, between Jetee de Mustapha and Quay No 37.

Vessels entering or leaving Algiers must follow the channel between No 1 Lightbuoy and No 3 Buoy on the W side and No 2 and 4 Lightbuoys on the E side.

Vessels entering through the S entrance should pass 600m E of the head of Jetee de Mustapha.

The main access to the channels are:

The North Pass: located between the N Jetty and the South Spike has an extension of the E Jetty to the N, width 176m, depth 20m.

The Wadi Hamimine pass, crossing the basin of the old port to the basin of Agha, width 83m, depth 12.0m.

The Great Mole Pass: crossing the Mustapha Basin, width 100m, depth 11.0m

The southern pass: formed between a transversal spike at the pier of Mustapha and the breakwater East, width 240m, depth 16.0m.

The port can be entered from the N entrance, with a max depth of 22m and width of 176m or S entrance, with a max depth of 16m and width of 240m.
