updated Aug 2010Approach
Directions for entering harbour:
From N: From the vicinity of 18°28.6'N 067°11.8'W, with Punta Borinquen Light bearing 064° distant 3nm, the recommended track leads 155°, keeping approx 1nm off the coast, passing: WSW of a fish haven (18°27.5'N 067°10.1'W) with an authorised minimum depth of 20.0m.
When the N tower of the cathedral bears 110°, or is in line with a rounded hill that is a little higher than the surrounding hills and shows up on the skyline from the W, the track leads along this line towards the anchorage.
From S: From the vicinity of 18°23.7'N 067°17.0'W, with Punta Higuero Light bearing 155°, the track leads towards the N part of the town then approaches the anchorage on the line of bearing 110°, as given above.
Anchorages
The usual anchorage in Bahia de Aguadilla is along the approach line, 110°, in depths of 16.0-36m, anchoring when the chosen depth has been achieved. As the bottom shoals rapidly it is usual to veer cable to the anchoring depth prior to arrival. This anchorage is calm during the prevailing winds but from Nov to Mar there are sometimes strong N winds and a high sea, rendering the anchorage dangerous.
At night it is possible to anchor off the centre of the town lights.
